Is Nutella Vegan?

No, Nutella is not vegan. Nutella ingredients contain skim milk, which is an animal product. The good news is that you can easily make homemade Nutella healthy (and by using clean Nutella ingredients)! So, let’s ask the question again. Is Nutella vegan? This homemade Nutella is!

I’ll be honest here, I have always wanted to try Nutella. It seems like a lot of people tend to rave about the product. It is quite the sweet southern comfort! As many times as I’ve ‘tried’, I couldn’t bring myself to buy Nutella. The ingredients are mainly processed and not ‘clean’. As my boys have gotten older, I’ve found that my strictness on eating clean foods has weakened. (It’s all about balance AND sanity — am I right Mamas?!)

Peer pressure sank in and I lost my ability to resist Nutella any longer! I tried (and thoroughly enjoyed) Nutella. The flavor was ah-may-zing. I just can’t bring myself to buy it very often, if at all. (It’s all about balance AND sanity — am I right Mamas?!) I figure there has to be a way to make homemade Nutella healthy using clean ingredients. Why not make it vegan using plant based Nutella ingredients!

Nutella Ingredients

Nutella ingredients mainly consist of hazelnuts, cocoa, sugar, and milk. We are going to make homemade Nutella healthy by putting a plant-based spin on the original Nutella ingredients.

This homemade Nutella recipe consists of raw hazelnuts, cacao powder, agave nectar, pitted dates, and unsweetened almond milk.

Where to Find Vegan Nutella Ingredients

First you’ll have to source your Nutella ingredients. I personally had difficulty finding raw hazelnuts in my local grocery stores. I checked several for Nutella ingredients including Whole Foods, Publix, BI-LO, Harris Teeter, and Wal-Mart (all of the southern staple stores here in Charleston, SC 🏖).

After striking out all over town, I went to my trusty Amazon account and easily found raw hazelnuts. I reviewed most of the hazelnuts available on Amazon and decided on Anna and Sarah Raw Oregon Hazelnuts. Ultimately, I selected this brand for my homemade Nutella recipe because they are raw and grown in the USA. The fact that they are ‘raw’ means that they have not been roasted and do not contain added salt. A perfect choice in making homemade Nutella healthy!

I found the other Nutella ingredients easily in my local grocery stores.

If you’d like to make it easy and get everything using Amazon Pantry, here are the links to everything you’ll need:

Cacao Powder

Agave Nectar

Pitted Dates

Unsweetened Almond Milk

Now you have the ingredients you’ll need, and no excuse to not make this delicious and super easy homemade Nutella recipe.

Without further ado, here is my version of a healthy Nutella recipe!

Homemade Nutella Ingredients

1-cup raw hazelnuts

½ cup cacao powder

¼ cup agave nectar

15-pitted dates

½ cup unsweetened almond milk

Add additional milk and/or cacao powder as needed for consistency.

How to Make Homemade Nutella

Are you ready for the best part? Simply toss all ingredients into your blender or food processor, and blend until smooth. You may need to open the blender a few times to scrape the Nutella ingredients off of the sides. Continue blending until the Nutella ingredients reach a smooth consistency. That’s it!

I personally use a Vitamix Professional Series 750 Blender. I find that it does the best job in creating a smooth consistency for just about any recipe. Some other great options include the Ninja Blender and a Cuisinart Food Processor. I have owned and loved all of these kitchen gadgets. Feel free to ask any questions!

Tip: If you use the Ninja Blender to make this homemade Nutella recipe, I recommend using the single serving blender cups. The blender cups do a WAY better job of creating a smooth consistency versus the main blender pitcher.
